One of the youngest art museums in Ukraine, the Chernihiv Art Museum is named after them. Gregory Galan, founded in 1983. It was located in the building of the former women's gymnasium on Val - the territory belonging to the ancient Chernihiv Kremlin. The museum surprisingly carries the imprint of the glorious historical past of the Ukrainian people.
The basis of the museum's artistic fund, which has about eight thousand exhibits, is undoubtedly a unique family collection of Galagans, represented by a number of works of Ukrainian portrait painting of the XVIII - XVIII centuries.
An outstanding collection of icon painting deserves special attention, the pearl of which is the old canvas "Archistrateg Michael".
A wide range of artistic works impresses with the variety and number of famous names of Ukrainian and Russian artists. These are canvases by I. Aivazovsky "Storm at Sea", O. Volkova "Gothic Bridge in Sokyrynsky Park", I. Sokolov "Deviling of Girls on the Wreaths on Marriage" and many others.
The gallery of paintings of the Soviet period is represented by famous painters of the brush: M. Glushenko, N. Zhuk, T. Yablonska, S. Shishko.
Along with the treasures of collections of art galleries, exhibits of decorative and applied arts, which are sponsored by eminent masters and original craftsmen. Unique works embellish sections of embroidery, appliqués, paintings, glassware, clay, ceramics and wood, and an amazing collection of folk toys, which has about 350 exhibits, fascinates the depth of talent folk artists.
In the walls of the museum there are regular exhibitions of artists, photo exhibitions, graphic arts exhibitions and works of decorative arts.
